Austin Stewart Quartet
Instrumental grooves to make your booty move! With influences like The Meters, Circles Around the Sun, and Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood, these guys like to jam on original compositions from Austin Stewart that lean into funk and soul jazz influences. The group features Mac Brown (guitar), Spencer Finnan (keys), Curtis Waterbury (bass), and Austin Stewart (drums/composer).
Based in Portland, OR, Austin Stewart is a drummer and composer who grew up following his own rhythm. His sound cross-pollinates the mentality and improvisation of jazz with the groove and heartbeat of funk and soul jazz music. He has studied music and percussion for more than 30 years with a focus on composition, performance and education.
His most recent album, Live at Ruse Brewing 2020.02.22 features Mac Brown (guitar), Mike Kane (keys), Curtis Waterbury (bass) and Austin Stewart (drums) and was recorded at the wonderful Ruse Brewing in Portland, OR on February 22, 2020. Bonk, released in 2018, features trumpeter Farnell Newton (Othership Connection, Jill Scott, Bootsy Collins), one of the most versatile musicians in the Pacific Northwest who has shared the stage with Skerik, Lettuce, Karl Denson, Galactic and the Portland Cello Project. The album includes Mac Brown (guitar), Spencer Finnan (keys), Drew Nelson (bass), and Austin Stewart (drums/composer), and was released in the Winter of 2018. Bonk was preceded by Looking for a Sign, released in 2015, and his debut album Shake It Out, released in 2013.
Stewart was raised in the famed jazz town of Kansas City, where he grew up studying all aspects of jazz, from the music and compositions, to the history and impact on culture. He graduated on the Dean's List in 2002 from Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, and has studied with top artists like Kenwood Dennard (Maceo Parker, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter), Skip Hadden (John Abercrombie, Lou Donaldson, Weather Report), Rick Considine (BB King, Michael Brecker, Jaco Pastorius, Eddie Gomez), Keith Kavanaugh (Doug Talley Quartet), singer/songwriter Livingston Taylor (James Taylor's brother), lyricist/songwriter Pat Pattison (students include Gillian Welch, John Mayer) and Grammy award winning composer/arranger/bassist Richard Evans (Stan Getz, Ramsey Lewis, Jimmy Smith).
